Features that could make the MG Astor a new benchmark in the sub-17 lakh Segment

The Astor will be launched early next month and will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine NA and a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine. MG Motor India will launch the Astor in the first week of next month and reservations have begun at dealerships and online. The 4.3-metre midsize SUV will compete directly with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster, Skoda Kushaq and the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun. The Astor is positioned below the Hector in the brand's domestic portfolio and features a host of premium technologies to set it apart from its rivals.

The five-seater is expected to be priced aggressively between Rs. 9 lakh and Rs. 17 lakh (ex-showroom) and could set new benchmarks with a range of advanced features. Chief among these is a new 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Jio e- SIM compatibility that offers connectivity-based convenience features. Most unique of all is surely the minibot on the dashboard - an artificial intelligence-based personal assistant that follows voice commands and answers questions from online sources. The British manufacturer, owned by Chinese company SAIC, will also offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard across its range.

The biggest highlight of the MG Astor is undoubtedly the first Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), which is based on assistive and active safety features and gives it a unique selling point compared to other mid-size SUVs. We will tell you how good they are in a full review in the coming days, but before that, we have linked the first look video of the Astor here, as its exterior will also be a talking point. The ADAS technology will allow for lane departure warning, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, etc.

Like the Hector, the Astor will be sold in a wide range. As far as power is concerned, a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine will be used. The former develops 140bhp/220Nm and is mated to a six-speed gearbox AT only, while the latter develops 110bhp/144Nm and is mated to either a six-speed gearbox MT or an eight-speed CVT.
