How MG Astor stands out from the crowd of compact SUVs

MG Motor India will start taking pre-orders for its fourth product, the Astor, on Thursday and deliveries will begin in November.

Will Astor's entry into the compact SUV space pose a challenge to the well-positioned Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos? The Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq, which have just entered the market, will also fight tooth and nail for their niche.

Amid this raging war, Astor's armour, according to the SAIC -backed company, is a Car-as-a-Platform (CAAP) subscription model for Astor that prioritises on-demand in-car services and subscriptions in the areas of utility, entertainment, safety and payment for consumers.

MG's IoT partner, Jio, enables in-car connectivity, providing access to real-time connectivity, infotainment, telematics and music streaming services. Customers get a free 4GB internet package in the SUV, which can be extended up to 9GB and 14GB for an additional cost.

The Halol-based company's first and most popular product, the Hector, took the market by storm, largely thanks to the features included in the 'Internet Inside' package. Astor, on the other hand, is all set to raise the bar with 'AI Inside' - a functionality that is unprecedented in the segment. MG Motor expects to ship 5,000 units of the Astor by the end of 2021.

Moreover, MG 's CAAP subscription model includes the service of booking and pre-paying for parking through Park+ in three cities (NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore) and will be extended to nine cities in the near future. The first three months of the service are free, after which an additional six months are available for Rs 1,199.

Another part of MG 's evolving i-Smart hub is a digital vehicle passport based on the blockchain-backed KoineArth. This allows customers to share their digital passport with third parties such as insurance partners or used car portals to get a higher resale value or better insurance premium based on their driving history and service loyalty. This digital passport can be purchased for Rs 1,000 for the first year.

Rajeev Chaba, President and MD, MG Motor India, said, "We announced the CAAP vision in August and now we are integrating the subscription-based model in Astor. Our constant endeavour is to evolve CAAP to offer innovative services that meet the rapidly changing needs of modern consumers by collaborating with more ecosystem partners."

The MG Astor has been launched in four trim levels. The 1.5-litre VTi-tech petrol is priced between Rs 9.78 lakh and Rs 14.98 lakh (ex-showroom). The more powerful 1.3-litre turbo petrol with 6- AT is priced between Rs 15.88 lakh and Rs 16.78 lakh (ex-showroom). The latter also offers Level 2 autonomous driving features.
