Eco-Friendly Latest Electric Cars - Is There a Diesel Hybrid?
At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen introduced an off-road concept car using a diesel hybrid powertrain. The car is equipped with a turbocharged 1.8-liter diesel engine, used in conjunction with an electric auxiliary motor, Volkswagen claims that it can travel 131 miles per gallon. They also claim that this 4000-pound car can rise from 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds. These results are amazing, and since this is a concept, you can say almost anything you want to do with the product because no one will drive it. However, Volkswagen has been found to be testing another diesel hybrid vehicle.
Volkswagen has been developing diesel hybrid vehicles under the name XL1. In 2014, the Volkswagen XL1 used an 800cc turbocharged diesel engine to produce less than 50 horsepower, but the torque was about 89 pound-feet. Then the diesel engine assisted by a 27-horsepower electric motor helped propel the 1,749-pound car. Volkswagen claims that this ultra-light, streamlined car can travel 235 miles per gallon. The power is so small that unless you are going to drive over long distances, the vehicle seems unable to win any races. However, the fact that these Volkswagen companies are developing efficient vehicles by using off-the-shelf technology is really great. Therefore, if we can simply let Americans start buying diesel cars, then we should see other manufacturers promote the development of some latest electric cars.
We see that today's trains provide incredible efficiency, thanks to diesel generators that power the locomotives. Therefore, why can't we use heavy trucks and commercial vehicles to do this, resulting in higher fuel efficiency and saving owners' fuel costs. Either way, Volkswagen is making progress using this technology, and hope we can see other companies catch up and start producing diesel hybrid cars. For 2013, we will start to see diesel enter the US market, but it still depends on whether the car is sold.
