How MG Motor India Different From Other Car Company

MG Motor's MG ZS EV has undergone a "wading" test. The company's all-electric car, to be launched in India in January, was recently tested in Shanghai.

Calibration action

Rajiv Chaba, president and general manager of MG Automotive India, realizes that India is not ready for electric vehicles. "We want to be different as a technology leader," he told BusinessLine. With technology leadership, he is not limited to products. He added: "MG Motor India is building (with partners) charging infrastructure and a battery end-of-life strategy." Chaba hopes that this positioning will make MG a force to be reckoned with in India and lay the foundation for its long-term plans. , Including the possibility of entering the small car market.

Currently, MG Motor is taking calibration steps. Its production has been measured. "Our basic knowledge is correct. Our focus has always been to recruit the right people, choose the right dealers and build the right brand image." The company has just begun the second round of transformation to meet the demand for MG Hector.

Dealer Support

On the dealer side, it wants to avoid mistakes made by other automakers. "We tell the dealers that you want to take care of your customers and we will take care of your profitability," said Gaurav Gupta, a chief commercial officer of MG Automotive India.

The company appoints a dealer in only one city to ensure they generate profit for the dealer. Its retail business involves five different models, keeping in mind the largest customer coverage and dealer profitability.

SAIC, the parent company of MG, is China's largest automaker, with sales of more than 7 million units in 2018. The company has promised to invest Rs 50 crore and launch five new products by 2022. It acquired General Motors' Halol car plant for Rs 20 crore in 2017.
Battery push

SAIC Motor Corporation spent $ 1.5 billion to build a state-of-the-art battery manufacturing plant in Liyang, Jiangsu. This is the first investment made by a car manufacturer, which will provide MG ZS EV power to MG Hector. Chaba added: "Having our own facilities will help us better customize our batteries for our models and give us a price advantage."

SAIC's focus on India is not surprising. After all, India is a growing market and it is crucial for SAIC to establish its global position. The reputation of being a technology leader will help the Chinese company gain a foothold in the Indian market, which has proven to be the graveyard of multinational car manufacturers.
